Listening Carefully at Holistic Healing & Nutrition
July 27, 2017
Story by Erin Wyble Newcomb
The exterior of Holistic Healing and Nutrition’s office is nondescript—a beige building surrounded by superficially similar businesses in Poughkeepsie. Once inside, the waiting room is filled with brochures and a streaming video about health and nutrition; though it’s set up like a traditional waiting area, the range of products and media suggest that this place is something special. My meeting with owner Kara Bohack convinced me that her practice is passionately committed to providing the Hudson Valley with holistic healing, or, as Kara emphasized in our talk, “asking the body what it needs.”
A lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley, Kara started out as a patient at Holistic Healing & Nutrition and started training to do Nutrition Response Testing herself because she believed in it so much. Kara exuded enthusiasm throughout our entire conversation; as I sat across from her, she noted how often people cry in her office, first out of frustration, and then a few weeks later, out of relief. There are a number of independent practitioners in the office, and Kara says, “We now offer a wide range of services: acupuncture and massage, allergy testing and elimination, Bowen Therapy, essential-oil consultations, gentle spinal and cranial chiropractic, Functional Medicine, meal planning and Nutrition Response Testing.” Kara appreciates the collaborative, multi-modal approach of the practice, and she relies on the other practitioners for her self-care, too. She’d gone for a chiropractic adjustment right before our meeting, highlighting the shared energy and wisdom of the practice.
